Your account can land differently.

This is the community's default call, weighed across the general evidence. Whether Audience Network placements helps or hurts still varies from account to account: your business type, budget, vertical, goals, and how your conversion tracking is set up all move the answer. Plenty of accounts get the opposite result from the default and are right to.

Treat the verdict as a strong starting position, not a universal rule. The when to disable and when to enable split further down is exactly where that variation lives: find your situation there, then confirm it on your own account before you commit. The most reliable answer is always the one your own test gives you.

What it does

Audience Network extends Meta ad delivery beyond Facebook and Instagram into third-party mobile apps, mobile websites, and games that have integrated Meta's monetization SDK. When enabled, Meta's algorithm can serve your ads in banner, native, interstitial, and rewarded video formats across thousands of external publishers. Attribution still routes through Meta's pixel and SDK, but the actual impressions and clicks occur entirely off-platform in environments Meta does not fully control.

The recommendation

Disable Audience Network placements at the ad set level for any campaign with a conversion, lead gen, or retargeting objective. The quality gap between Meta-owned placements and third-party app inventory is substantial, and the risk of corrupting your pixel's learning data outweighs the CPM savings.

If you are running Advantage+ Placements and are hesitant to switch to full manual placement control due to CPM increases, the middle-ground approach is to keep Advantage+ enabled but upload a publisher block list via Brand Safety settings in Ads Manager. This removes the worst-performing Audience Network app URLs without fully restricting Meta's delivery optimization, preserving auction breadth while filtering out known low-quality sources.

For awareness or reach objectives where verified intent is not required, Audience Network can remain active, but set a frequency cap and monitor placement-level breakdowns weekly. If Audience Network is consuming a disproportionate share of impressions relative to its contribution to downstream metrics, pull it at that point.

Weighing it up

Reasons to enable

  • Lower CPMs and CPCs compared to Facebook and Instagram feed placements, which can reduce overall media cost in awareness or reach campaigns.
  • App install campaigns can benefit from in-app placements that reach mobile users already inside relevant app environments, making the format contextually appropriate.
  • Keeping Audience Network active preserves a wider auction pool for Advantage+ Placements, which can reduce CPM inflation that sometimes occurs when manually restricting placements.

Reasons to disable

  • Significant bot traffic and accidental click risk, particularly from banner and interstitial placements inside mobile games, inflates CTR and landing page view metrics without delivering genuine intent.
  • Conversion quality degrades for lead gen and ecommerce campaigns because users interacting with Audience Network placements are mid-app-session and not actively browsing with purchase or inquiry intent.
  • Garbage traffic from low-quality publishers can corrupt your pixel's learning signal, causing the algorithm to optimize toward audiences that mimic bot behavior rather than real converters.
  • Attribution is harder to verify since off-platform behavior is tracked via SDK integrations that vary in reliability across third-party apps, making accurate ROAS measurement more difficult.

When the call flips

This is where your account fits in.

Disable when

  • Any lead generation campaign where cost per qualified lead is the primary success metric, as Audience Network traffic consistently produces high volumes of low-quality or fraudulent form submissions.
  • Ecommerce conversion campaigns optimizing for purchase or add-to-cart, where below-the-funnel intent matters and click quality outweighs click volume.
  • Accounts experiencing unexplained spikes in landing page views or click-through rates that do not correspond to downstream conversions, a common signal of Audience Network bot activity.
  • Retargeting campaigns, where reaching a known high-intent audience in a controlled, verifiable environment is critical and Audience Network app context undermines message relevance.

Consider enabling when

  • Running app install campaigns where in-app placements are contextually relevant and CPM efficiency is the primary KPI.
  • Brand awareness or reach campaigns where verified conversion intent is not required and the goal is maximizing impressions at the lowest possible cost.
  • You are testing Advantage+ Placements and using a publisher block list via Brand Safety settings to filter out the worst-performing Audience Network apps rather than disabling the placement entirely.

What this looks like in an account

  • A conversion campaign with Advantage+ Placements enabled auto-allocates budget to Audience Network banner slots inside free mobile games, driving cheap CPMs but unverifiable conversion intent.
  • A lead gen ad set includes Audience Network by default; clicks arrive from app-embedded banners where accidental taps inflate CTR but produce no form fills.
  • Blocking specific Audience Network publishers via Brand Safety settings lets you stay on Advantage+ Placements while excluding known low-quality app traffic without fully restricting Meta's delivery.

How we reached this

This verdict is produced by the Shared Learnings engine, which weighs live web evidence and practitioner discussion against real A/B tests from the community, scored by source authority and recency. This run drew on 17 sources. As the community logs first-party tests on this setting, the verdict updates to reflect what those tests actually found. More on the methodology.
